After the summer plants have finished the Friends volunteers de-plant all the brick planters ensuring they are all under planted with tulips to welcome in the Spring.
These planters were always planted up by the council who put a few geraniums in and then left them, never watering therefore they usually struggled and died. Hence locally they become known as the “coffins” as nothing lived in them. After our success with the tub planters down Market Street these planters really did look bad, we asked the council if they would like our Friends group to take them over. Needless to say they were delighted. It was a bit daunting at first, there are 11 brick planters or “coffins” with each one taking around 30 plants, that means 333 plants to purchase apart from new compost and planting.
